Charlize Theron is no stranger to bulking up and slimming down in order to “get into character” for her latest movie role. Currently, Charlize is looking slim and trim in her new film Sleepwalking. Although Charlize’s yo-yo weight gain is strictly professional, she is intrgiued by inviduals around her who persoanlly battle the bulge:

“I’ve been fascinated by people who lose a lot of weight” - OK-Magazine

During a recent interview to promote her movie, the very opinionated star higlighted a link between her character’s belief that having a boyfriend will fix all of her problems and how long-term dieters’ experience similar expectations regarding their bodies:

“There’s this excitement and joy when they have gastric bypass surgery, and they actually truly believe that once they lose the weight all their problems will be solved,” said the actress. She continued, “That’s just not how life works. Once they lose the weight, they realize that, and that’s why they go and gain the weight back. ” - OK-Magazine

Post A Comment: What’s your opinion of Charlize’s “psychoanalysis” of long term dieters who lose a dramatic amount of weight?

What she is saying is largely true. However, I don’t think that, as an actress, she should be pulling that particular nugget out to compare it with her character’s problems being solved by having a boyfriend.

I had gastric bypass, but I KNEW that my problems wouldn’t be solved by having the surgery. Before I made the very difficult decision to go under the knife I joined Weight Watchers, joined a gym, got a personal trainer and started seeing a therapist because I knew that I needed to figure out if I could do it without surgery. After 18 months of VERY HARD work I’d lost 20 lbs…then I got sick and was put on steroids for my asthma and gained 30. I was over the battle. I faced all of my demons pre-op and some of them I got rid of and others are still with me but losing weight had NOTHING to do with the loss of those demons or the ones that remain.

Gaining and losing a couple of pounds for a job that’s going to pay you millions is worlds different than someone on the everyday grind trying to make ends meet and fighting hundreds of pounds. She’s sitting in a place of privilidge–just like Oprah–and judging what she cannot possibly understand. Oprah has someone to cook her meals and bring her glasses of water to be sure she gets in her 8 a day, what does she know about trudging to work at 7am thru LA rush hour traffic or on the LIRR? You can “Make the Connection” all you want, but if your time and finances don’t permit you to get Bob Greene to come run with you everyday or have Rosie fix your meals then how can you say that it’s easy?

This is the kind of statement that will cause her money cause I will certainly be avoiding her films now. I’m disgusted and I kind of liked her…Oh well.

Hold up and wait a minute. Oprah has never judged when it comes to weight loss or gain. In fact she is the perfect example of when you don’t get down to the core of why you are over weight. Yes, she has folks cooking her food and she has access to great trainers. But if she doesn’t put in the work, all that is in vein. Maybe that is what Charlize was TRYING to say but it came across wrong.

Um yeah ima agree with EVERYTHING Tevana said. I’ve been trying for about 2yrs to have this surgery and cant because my employer has exclusions in my insurance. You have oprah acting like she’s against it but sorry O, i cant afford my own personal trainer and chef. I spent all that money on weight watchers, jenny craig, slimfast, nutra system etc…..

Why does everyone always get angry when someone talks about something that they have not been through themselves? Can’t anyone have an opinion about something anymore without people having to boycott them or get them fired? I think that what she was saying is probably correct. But I don’t think she was saying that people should not have the surgery….just don’t have it for the wrong reasons.

I completely agree with what Charlize says. For every person like Tevana (above) there are 50 that are exactly like Charlize says. And I speak from experience. My mother had the surgery two years ago, lost a ton of weight, but didn’t change one thing about how she eats or exercises. She’s skinny now, but it’s all going to come back soon.

And I’ve been to the support meetings. There are more people like my mom than there are like Tevana. So good for those who confront and defeat their own personal demons, but those who haven’t done it, shouldn’t even consider having the surgery until they’ve gotten the real help they need.

I have never seen anything that would look so disgusting. Why do people publish stuff like that? I don’t understand them!
