Gordon Ramsay is the host, judge, and head chef for the Fox show, Hell’s Kitchen. This hot headed cook is infamous for cooking rich foods like risotto and beef Wellington. So how does he stay fit in the face of these sinful creations?

When he is tempted to indulge in fatty foods he just reminds himself of his past battles with weight:

“I was a fat chef once, ten years ago. I don’t think it’s a good advert for any restaurant – a fat chef and secondly, who wants to eat a dessert when the chef’s a fat pig.” - Daily Mail

Besides eating healthy, Gordon trains like a true Iron Chef because later this year he plans to compete in his first Iron Man competition (A Hawaii based triathlon). In addition, he is looking to run the Paris and London marathons.

So what is his daily workout routinue? Apparently, he enjoys randomly going on 30 mile bike rides whenever he has some down time and ……

“I’ve got this amazing backpack and every night — Monday, Wednesday, Friday — whether I’m in LA, New York or London, or Paris, I’ll fill it up with potatoes and I’ll run down whatever river is adjacent to the hotel. I went for a run three nights ago with a huge backpack full of potatoes and I’m just — head down, run, run, run, music on — and I’ll do a 90 minute, two hour run, get home, eat my breakfast before I go to bed. That way I can spend an extra 15 minutes in bed. The most amazing way of doing it, but honestly, Raisin Bran, at half past one in the morning is just a great way to finish a day.” - Daily Mail

So there you have it - Gordon Ramsay might not be the politest guy around, but he is one FitChef!

Too FitCeleb?

Danica Patrick.sportsillusswimsuitissue

Danica Patrick, who has been a race car driver for years, feels as though she’s being penalized by an Indy Racing League rule for being petite. She also says that this would never happen in other sports.

Starting this season, the minimum weight for IRL cars will include the driver, and Danica is the series’ lightest at 100 pounds according to the 2007 media guide (which lists other female drivers Milka Duno and Sarah Fisher at 120 pounds apiece; Ed Carpenter is the heaviest at 165).

“If someone’s going to take the hit it’s going to be me. It’s disappointing the league decided to do that. In so many other sports, athletes don’t get penalized for being too strong, or too tall or too fast. (It’s) just your God-given stature is being penalized. What am I going to do, though?”

Danica said she asked IRL officials about the reason for the change:

“They didn’t really have one.”

“I just follow the rules,” she said. “Maybe I’ll get more specific reasons somewhere down the line –”

The Benefits Of Listening To Music While You Workout

Friday, March 28th, 2008 at 2:00 pm

Hollywood bad boy Sean Stewart was photographed enjoying a run through Runyon Canyon yesterday. While Sean pounded the pavement, he enjoyed listening to some tunes on his CD player. Sean has the right idea because surprisingly there are some real physiological benefits to listening to music while you workout.

“Blocking all the external noises by listening to music, facilitates better relaxation of one’s mind as well so that the person working out may not feel the strain of the exercise as much as if it were in a tuneless atmosphere.” -PersonalPowerTraining.Net

This is important, since many people avoid working out because of the physical strain. In addition:

“Some research associated with music therapy points out that stimulating music actually increases the muscle tension, the reason why people – for example - are able to take chest presses more easily while listening to fast music than anything sedative or slow. Few studies also claim that music has close links with stimulating motor functions.” -PersonalPowerTraining.Net

So if you don’t already listen to tunes during your daily workout, you might want to start! Just remember, the speed of the activity should match the rhythm of the music. So if you are warming up or cooling down the music should be slower. If you are in the midst of a sprint or fast cycle, up beat music is your best bet. That is why I love Serena Williams’ Interval Run which is a 30 minute blend of music that is designed to match the narrated pace of the exercise.

Patrick Swayze’s Fight Just Got A Whole Lot Healthier

Friday, March 28th, 2008 at 1:00 pm

 Patrick swayze

I’m sure all of you heard about Patrick Swayze’s fight against Pancreatic cancer, and it seems that his strong physique may be his greatest weapon against this horrible disease. The 55-year old actor has been given new hope after learning that the drug he’s taking to fight his illness responds better to people who are physically fit.

“The drug that Patrick Swayze is taking, Vatalanib, is still in the experimental stage”

Dr. M. Wasif Saif, Associate Professor of Medicine and Director of the Gastrointestinal Program at Yale Universtiy tells OK!. “But recent studies have shown promise for patients taking the drug who are in excellent physical shape.”

Patrick’s strength comes from years of horse riding and his dance training at the Joffrey Ballet School in New York. East Valley Feed and Tack owner, John Fusano tells OK!

“Patrick orders supplies for his horses from us. I haven’t seen him in a while, but he’s a strapping giant of a man. He’s got tree trunks for legs!”

I really hope this medication works for him and he pulls through. I still cry every time I watch “Dirty Dancing”!

Is Katie Holmes Suffering From Anemia?

Friday, March 28th, 2008 at 12:00 pm

katie_holmes_joans_001_wenn5104694.jpg

Earlier this week INO covered Katie Holme’s collapse, which Star Magazine blamed on Katie’s inability to keep up with her high strung husband. As entertaining as that angle was, I decided to do a little more digging. After reading the below quote my initial gut reaction was an eating disorder:

Dizzy spells like this have become a frighteningly common occurrence for Katie over the past few weeks. As one source explains to Star, Katie has been suffering from splitting headaches that make her see black spots and feel faint. Another problem? Her weight. Although she’s already rail thin, she feels pressure to be even slimmer and is obsessive about dieting. - DailyMail.Com

Although, I wouldn’t rule out the possibility of an eating disorder permanently, (after all- this size zero celeb is rail thin), but I also came across another interesting possibility….. The headaches, confusion, and dizziness are all warning signs of an iron deficiency knows as Anemia:

“Anemia, caused by a lack of iron, can result in: brittle nails, confusion, constipation, depression, dizziness, fatigue, headaches, inflamed tongue, mouth lesions” - 1stholistic.com

My recommendation is that Katie see a doctor immediately in order to get to the root cause of her fainting spells. In the interim, if she does experience another round of dizziness she should take a spoon full of honey to quickly raise her blood sugar levels. Make The Right Date With Your Doc

Friday, March 28th, 2008 at 11:00 am

 doctors visit

If you’re like the rest of us, you probably squeeze a doctor’s visit between lunch and 2 o’clock (which is probably your lunch break from work). However, you should be more careful the next time you schedule a visit because you may be compromising your health. Research shows that when you get certain procedures can affect their accuracy-and your level of comfort. (Once again, sorry guys, but this is more geared towards the women!)

Get a mammogram during your period or the week after. A study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute found that breasts become denser-or less fatty-during the early part of your menstrual cycle due to hormonal fluctuations. Dense tissue appears opaque on X-rays, making it harder to detect small, early-stage tumors.

Get a colonoscopy first thing in the morning. In 10 percent of cases, physicians are unable to complete a colonoscopy because it’s too uncomfortable for patients. A new study in BMC Gastroenterology found that those who underwent the screening in the a.m. were more likely to go through the full procedure (the entire colon is examined) than patients who had one in the afternoon. Researchers say it’s because the p.m. patients were less likely to adhere to the daylong fast, making it harder for the doctor to navigate the colon.

Get a teeth cleaning two weeks after your period. Your teeth and gums become more sensitive the week before you menstruate, according to Israeli researchers. Have surgery in the morning. Duke University researchers found that medical mistakes during operations are most frequent between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. and least common between 9 a.m. and noon, when surgeons are more likely to be alert.

Well, that was an eye opener! Hope you all take the advice cuz I know I will.
