Originally, I thought the mark on Gwyneth Paltrow's hand was a result of one of her favorite spa treatments, cupping. But looking at the high resolution, it just appears to be a bruise.
Here she is in London attempting to reach her car with the help of a bodyguard.
I have cupping on the brain... While I haven't had the opportunity to visit a spa that offers it, I am curious to hear if any INO readers have. In case you haven't heard about it, cupping is a treatment used to remove toxins from the body with the help of a burning cotton ball and several glass cups. You can read about it here.

I have actually had that done on my back before. It isn't too painful but it involves quite a bit of pressure because it suctions your skin into the cup. I went to a holistic chiropractor and they did the therapy on me for a few treatments. I didn't notice too much of a difference, but it did tend to loosen up my back!
My mom used to have this done on her back, I don't remember her saying it was all that effective, but I do remember the horrific burn marks all over her back.
I've had this done before and do have it at my massages. It's really cool. I don't find it to be painful at all. It feels weird at first because there is suction going on and it's warm and the jars are really really cold, and you do get those awful marks on you but it doesn't hurt at all. My therapist moves thema round from upper to lower back and that's the only time it really bothers me b/c it itches when she does it. Dunno why, but it's really cool. Give it a shot!
It might feel good, but all of these "treatments" (like the one of soaking feet in that nasty solution to draw the toxins out) have been proven not to work. Scientists say that toxins do not come out of the skin in that manner, the pores are not large enough for anything to come out of. Obviously, I can't explain it in technical terms like they can, but you can google all of these supposed claims and see the truth. But if it feels good and doesn't harm you, go for it!
That's why we have a liver!
and kidneys!
I just read something in Skeptics about this too -- that the body is made to remove toxins as necessary, and the therapies to do so aren't necessary or even helpful. I was kind of bummed. I loved drinking my detox tea and thinking it was doing something for me. That said, I did read a bit on cupping, and it does supposedly have benefits in stimulating blood flow in certain areas, etc., much like acupuncture. And if it feels good and/or relaxes, it's a good thing, but it probably doesn't do much for toxins.
LOL! Good point. :-D
I am dying to try kinoki pads, until it is time to part with the twenty bucks. When they hit ten, I am in. Anyone try them? I think just the fascination, like biore strips, which I don't need but love to see if I can get a zit with it, kwim? Holding it up to the light after lol. Ok, tmi on a gross level...
I wish someone in london would go crazy and stab Gwyneth in the face ...not kill her, but just injure and mame her
cupping is very old.....i had it done years ago in malta when i had a cyst on the end of my spine and could not sit or lay on my back.....it takes a long time and i think it went away with time any way...
Um, maybe that comment from "Anonymous" should be removed? It's pretty disturbing. I've never gotten why so many people dislike GP. I think people are threatened by intelligent, competent women with a strong sense of self. I've always thought she was incredibly articulate whenever I've heard her interviewed, and to me, she's an example of someone who's genuinely beautiful, no matter whether she's glammed up for an event, or simply walking around town with kids in tow.
F^ck you!
I have accupunture three times a week and cupping once a month. It really helps with tension in the back mostly for me. I do alot of computer work and have two children so it really helps loosen the back & sholders. I think it feels great!! and can always tell a BIG differance after having it done!!! You should try it.
that's very popular in Russia, but mostly not for removing toxins. I had to have this when i was sick with bronchitis (i'm not from Russia though). Kinda painful (and those awful bruises on my back afterwards), but it helped a lot =)
