Charlize Theron Might Lose $20 Million In Watch Lawsuit

Picture this. Someone gives you $20 million to wear their watches 24/7 for a specified period of time. Would you do it? Not only would I do it - but I wouldn't take the darn thing off. I would shower in the watch just to make sure I am not messing up the contract.

Well, Charlize Theron must have other things on her mind because Raymond Well is taking her to court to get back the money they fronted her for such a deal. Why?  Because Charlize isn't wearing their watches! HOW EASY is that? Wear the watch - get $20 million.

Charlize is due in court later this month. She tried to fight the lawsuit in February, but a judge ruled it's worth a trial.

This shows my point, once you step on american soil, you lose 99.3826% of your intellectual ability. Had she been in Europe or Africa, it would have hit her that she was about to make a mistake. Gaan Charlize jou Doring!! Wys hierdie dof amerikaanse dat jy deur ietsie soos die kan deurkom. FYR Africa is that large continent below Europe (the Northern continent other side of the Atlantic) and not south of Mexico!

I am surprised that Raymond Weil would pay $20 million to any celebrity to wear their watches. I wouldn't have thought members of the general public seeing a celebrity wearing a RW watch would generate that many dollars worth of sales? Obviously I am incorrect. As for Raymond Weil suing Charlize Theron, that's fair, if she didn't keep up her end of the deal.

why would they pay her to begin with? she is truly annoying. i feel that she tries to be mysterious and cool, but she is pretty goofy.

sometimes i really hate celebs...they seem to take so much for granted. it was her jobs to wear the watch, she should get into trouble.

Quite bad publicity for the watch company, when someone won't even wear their damned watches for 20 mill! :)

How hard could it be to wear the bloomin watch?

It's WEIL, just fyi. And unless they gave her a terrible skin rash, she was crazy not to wear them.

Well, isn't she just full of herself? I like her movies, but apparently in real life, she's an idiot. She deserves to lose the money. Sad thing is though, she probably won't miss it.

Well since she's bangin' Will Smith I guess losing $20 million ain't no thang to Ms. Charlize!!

I can't believe they paid her that much money! I never thought that even big stars could get quite that much for an endorsement. $10M maybe, but $20M is an enormous amount of money.

I gotta say, that is some EASY money, and NOT a hard contract to keep. Just wear the watch, man. For $20 million how hard can that be?!?!?!?

Raymond Weil, not well

Please try and get your facts straight. Charlize was NOT paid $20 million. That is the amount Raymond Weil is claiming. According to them the fact that Charlize wore a Dior watch once destroyed their entire advertising campaign thus costing them $20 Million. She was probably paid $1 or $2 Million.

Oh so she was just paid 1 or 2 million for wearing a watch...we are living in a crazy world, aren't we? And I'm supporting the crazyness by reading INO! What the hell, it's my thing let it go ;-)

I think it was about $3 million for a year long advertising campaign for a particular line of watches, with the rights to use her image etc in print etc. That's not excessive in that line of business. Personally I do think there's too too much commercialization going on. I think Charlize was photographed twice wearing Dior watches. Weil also violated terms of the contract. If would be a bit surprised if she deliberately violated contracts since I've always admired her for her apparent level of integrity.

Apologies if this bores anyone but since this site doesn't seem to be one of the usual 'gutter rag' type sites I'll add some info. The preliminary judgment (see pdf at WSJ ) has dismissed all claims against Charlize except one. The violation happened when Charlize attended a press conference for about an hour wearing a Dior watch a mistake she called 'regrettable'. A press photographer posted an image on WireImage where it was picked up and used by a Dior retailer in a swiss trade magazine. In the same magazine Weir violated contract terms by using another model for the same line of watches though DDF (Denver and Delilah Films ,charlize's production company, named after two of her dogs) never made a claim for that. Weirs 'expert' on damages to them included an ex male model (yeah sure!!). It seems Weir were annoyed that charlize chose to not renew the agreement for another year. Wow an advert in an obscure trade magazine totally destroyed Wiers year long worldwide advertising campaign. IMHO that Just makes them look like idiots.

As an example of a claim the judge dismissed: A watch and jewelry company (Montblanc) agreed to donate about $250000 to a charity (EIF) if they could find a celeb to wear their jewelry. Charlize agreed to participate. So far no problem. unfortunately Montblanc used a poster showing their jewelry draped on Charlizes arm in their booth at a swiss trade show. R Weil notified DDF (see above) who requested Montblanc to remove the poster which was done, thus affecting a 'cure' within 5 days as allowed by the agreement. Weil wanted to claim $1 million for every violation. So basically Charlize donates time to a charity and Weil wants her to pay $1 million because another company (montblanc) screwed up. And most of the commentators above think Raymond Weil are the good guys. WTF.
