Bon Jovi Sued For $400 Billion

I almost didn't write about this story until I saw the amount of money Jon Bon Jovi was being sued for. How can I pass up a lawsuit for $400 Billion dollars?

I mean $400 BILLION dollars? A Massachusetts-based musician Samuel Bartley Steele is suing Bon Jovi for allegedly stealing his lyrics from (Man I Really) Love This Team and rewriting them to create I Love This Town.

Steele alleges the group’s frontman Jon Bon Jovi heard the song while campaigning for U.S. Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry in 2004, and used its lyrics to create his hit song I Love This Town - which was later used as a promotional track for Major League Baseball.

He wants $100,000 for every cd sold. Since there were 4,000,000 that were distributed - he felt it was the right number to pitch to a judge. Good luck Samuel... good luck.

"As intent will be easy to prove, we are seeking the statutorily authorized amount of $100,000 per CD sold. Just under 4 million CDs have been sold to date. This totals almost $400 billion."

While plagiarism should be fined, the amount is just absurd and makes the case laughable. If he would have requested a reasonable amount, this court case might have been taken more seriously. Either way, let's see what the judge awards if anything.

Funny, it's always by someone no one has ever heard. I doubt after 20 years in the music industry, Bon Jovi is NOW going to start "stealing" lyrics.

it's exactly the people you've never heard of that are the most vulernable to these kinds of scams. of course Bon Jovi would steal song ideas from an unknown, he's less likely to be caught that way. why would you steal music from justin timberlake? every 7th grader in the world would be on to you. Anyway, I would be shocked if this is the first time Bon Jovi has 'borrowed' ideas from another musician, he's not that talented.

What I don't get - why do these people who think their copyright was infringed wait such a long time to come forward? If I were a judge I'd consider that into my fact finding.

it is such an incredibly annoying song, i dont understand why anyone would want to fight for ownership of it? it should be a disgrace as an artist.

If his song was stolen, I hope justice prevails. But the 400 BILLION dollar amount is a bit puzzling to me.

Oh my goodness. At first I read the headline as $400 Million, then as I was reading the article it struck me that it was $400 BILLION. Perfectly stated that this is laughable. People file lawsuits for any reason these days. No way is this guy going to get close to a billion...I'm sure he'll be laughed straight out of court.
